When I first heard about Sky Ferreira, all I knew was that she was barely seventeen, ambitious as hell, and friends with Michael Jackson. Her music was percolating during the era of MySpace when Charli XCX and Marina and the Diamonds were also perfecting their skills in the studio and on stage, and Lily Allen had already found deserving fame and fortune. I don’t think anyone could have predicted the evolution of Sky from this:
It’s a brilliant evolution and not one that I believe has been fabricated or planned. Judging from the best, most recent article I’ve read about Sky Ferreira from Vulture, she has struggled to have her voice heard for many years, even before becoming a famous pop-rock star. So many actresses and singers go through the whole “I’m a woman now” metamorphosis, to the point where it now induces a sense of boredom and jaded apathy about the whole affair. But, Sky’s evolution from girl to woman is more intuitive. You want this girl to win and to keep using her voice on her own terms. I don’t know what her next album will entail or which fashion designer will scoop her up for their next campaign, but Sky is certainly one to keep an eye on and ears out for.
After years of waiting, Sky’s debut album “Night Time, My Time” is out and waiting for you! It ranks high on my list of albums to listen to in 2013. I can’t wait to get it and jam on repeat.
