Have you ever wanted to be a cool kid? The girl who gets all the guys and the guy who gets everyone’s respect? Did you ever want to be the one who lights up a room with a smile instead of standing in the background without ever being noticed? Look, all of us have been there. Some of us were always the last ones picked for team sports or gym at school. Some of us struggled to make friends. Some of us didn’t feel safe at home. Oh, and the cool kids you looked up to, or still do (!), were pressured to keep up with an exhausting image. It takes work to look perfect just as much as it does to be angry at the world.
In 2014, being cool has more to do than wearing the right clothes or listening to the right music. Being cool is about BEING YOURSELF. Look at all of the inspiring personalities out here, from Bethany Mota to Bevy Smith making a name for themselves by being themselves. We always hear that life is short, and yet a great amount of us seem to focus on things that won’t matter in the next hour. Focus on your goals, your dreams, your passions and I guarantee you that you won’t have time to focus on the “cool kids” and what they’re doing with their lives. You will be too busy building your dream life and relationships with the people you love and who care about you most.
Speaking of goals, dreams, and passions….do you have any? If so, is there anyone telling you that you’re stupid to think that you have the right to have them? Don’t even give those people your energy, much less any time of your day. DO YOU! Hold on to what you want outta of life and use your gifts to light up the world. Try to stay as positive as you can, even though there will be dark days. Everyone has them. I don’t think that you are truly living if you don’t go through struggle. Struggle will make you stronger and better equipped to face life and all that it will throw at you. If you accomplish your goals and your dreams do come true, HOORAY! You are a boss! But at this point you may start to have new goals and dreams, which is also really cool. That means you aren’t afraid to grow and learn. This is something that school or your parents may not teach you- that there is always something to learn and someone to learn from. It’s cool to learn from your mistakes and the mistakes of others. It’s cool to never give up. It’s cool to stop doing something that doesn’t make you happy anymore. It’s cool to think, especially for yourself.
It’s also important to know that you are allowed to grow at your own pace. You don’t have to have a boyfriend/girlfriend before you’re ready. You don’t have to buy those Lebrons you can’t afford because all your friends are getting them (with the Gram pics to prove it). You don’t have to beat yourself up because you’re not a billionaire at age 24. Think about the life you want to lead, how you want to inspire others, the happiness and love you want to have in your life, and the legacy you want to leave behind in this world.
In the words of M.I.A., you can be a follower, but whose your leader? Be your own brand of cool. Think about it.
