Halloween will be here in about nineteen days and I want to be more than a sexy kitten or wicked witch. Since lasr week, I have been toying with the idea of being Mary Poppins. I already have a medium-sized floral traveling bag and sunny disposition. Besides, who doesn’t love Mary Poppins?! The character and movie are Disney vault insta-classics and I can’t imagine a childhood without the two. So when I was gifted the Walt Disney Legacy Collection “Mary Poppins” CD, I popped that bad boy into my laptop and gave it a spin just so that I could see how many times I could say “Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious” fast in a row. Whimsy, nostalgia, and a sense of hope are all encompassed in this three-disc package, with a rad booklet inside about the story of Mary Poppins, sketches, and meeting excerpts. The sound quality is superb as well and if you are into film and music history, you will love listening to the pre-demos, “Lost Chords of Mary Poppins”, and the recorded Hollywood pre-production meetings for the film.
Another costume idea I may consider shopping around for this Halloween is Sleeping Beauty. Before meeting Angelina Jolie as Maleficent and Elle Fanning as Aurora in the live-action movie this summer, there was the original Walt Disney animated production to premiere 55 (!!!) years ago. Listening to the two-disc set reminds me of how majestic and regal the original movie felt and hearing these songs mastered on the Legacy Collection CDs captures the wonder and magic of “Sleeping Beauty” perfectly. I could fall asleep to these tunes and I mean that in the best way possible.
Still, if I were given an original costume from the Broadway production of “The Lion King”, complete with makeup, for Halloween, I would gladly accept. Simba, Nala, Mustafa…either one will do! I have met so many people of different ethnic backgrounds, ages, and genders who can either quote this movie, sing the soundtrack by heart, or both! Starting off with “The Circle of Life”, this two-disc set continues to bust out hit after memorable hit and I can’t help but sing along at the top of my lungs. Either my neighbours will side-eye me or join in.
If you love “Mary Poppins”, “Sleeping Beauty”, and/or “The Lion King” and want to help celebrate their 50th, 55th, and 20th anniversaries respectively, reply to this blog post with the Disney character you would dress up as this Halloween and why, even if you’ve already decided your costume already! The best answer (feel free to use your imagination and creativity!) will win all three Walt Disney Legacy Collection CDs of “Mary Poppins” (released on August 26th), “Sleeping Beauty” (released on October 7th) and “The Lion King” (released on June 24th)! Collectors items or gifts, they are beautiful and will be ready for you just in time for the holidays. You have one week from tomorrow to submit your answers, so…..LEGGO!!!!
