The last full-length Purity Ring album came out three years ago but still sounds fresh. However, let’s make way for “another eternity“, because three years is a long wait to hear new music from such an innovative, progressive duo.
Last week ushered in a SLEW of entertainment stories and events, some of which I attended, hence my complete lack of being consistent on this here blog. But it’s all been for a good cause- to share what’s new and next in THE BIZ.
First, let’s take a moment to congratulate Leslie Jones over at the Saturday Night Live homestead for being selected as a cast member on the show! Now there are two Black female comedians slaying on the show and the world became a little bit more brighter. The moment I saw Leslie onscreen for the first time during “Weekend Update” and I thought that she should not only be a writer, but also an actor on the show! Prayer answered.
Then the New York TV Festival came into town. It felt like it was just here! But now it’s October, soon to be Thanksgiving, soon to be Christmas, soon to be 2015. WTH. Alas I had plans to go to the MTV Panel, complete with red carpet action (!!!!) and take pictures of the event and write about what I’ve learned. But there was a greater plan in store for me. Yup, yours truly was invited to an Atlantic Records album listening party + meet and greet (hosted by Angela Yee!!!) for this talented lady:
I was whisked back to a time when Aaliyah and Mya ruled the airwaves as snippets of tracks from her upcoming album titled “Nightmares & Lullabies- Part I” played on. It was an even bigger treat to meet Victoria and talk with her about an idea I have for a show that I am hoping to produce on YouTube. She is a gem, a breath of fresh air, and judging from her track record of working with other artists such as B.o.B, Ariana Grande, & T.I., this girl is goin’ places. Watch her space!
Add to the fact that I officially have a new agent (Yes, Spoken Reasons is right- faith, hard work, and consistency PAYS OFF!), gained a film callback, was offered a new deal to be a contributing writer to a magazine whose family I REALLY wanted to be a part of for months, have a new shoot to look forward to in two weeks, and finally, finally FINALLY saw “Dear White People” (more about this wondrous movie in a whole new post), last week was an A+.
What else? Oh, YES! If you haven’t watched the TV movie adaptation of Stephen King’s “Big Driver” on Lifetime, you need to hop on it any way you can. Maria Bello gives a bravura performance. I won’t say any more than that!
Also, I was able to catch Foster the People at a gig in Washington Heights this past weekend (pictures to come on my Insta account). They didn’t play “Pumped Up Kicks”, even though that was the song that EVERYONE wanted to hear that night. The reason? Because of the recent school shooting in Washington. That was very classy of them, of which I can’t say the same for a good amount of the audience, some of whom started chanting “USA!” or how much they loved their guns during an imposed moment of silence by the band’s lead singer.
Yes, this was life last week. What pray tell will become of this week? Let’s find out.
I can’t believe that it’s been three years since Adele’s last album, “21”, topped the charts, but maybe that’s because it’s been stuck on repeat for the past three years! Adele is a timeless artist- she brings grace, class, scores of talent, and soundtracks to our lives that many generations after her will continue to sing. I can’t wait to hear what’s next on her third album, “25”, coming to us later this year!
Seriously if there wasn’t a Winter Storm warning in effect for tomorrow evening into Monday, I would haul tail to the Sony store in New York to get a copy of Lea Michele’s first album signed. But, that’s not going to happen because Winter Storm Titan will certainly show me who’s boss. So, if any of you are brave and able to get down to LOUDER signing at the Sony Plaza on Madison Avenue this coming Tuesday, HAVE FUN and BE SAFE!
Here is a (short) list of of LOUDER signing events happening in other parts of New York, New Jersey, and California this month: Lea Michele LOUDER Signing Appearances
“Divergent” is almost here (!!!!) and this past Monday its original motion picture soundtrack list was revealed. I’ve listened to the Ellie Goulding M83, and Snow Patrol songs, which are perfect for this movie, and I have to add that “Dream Machines” by Big Deal (a past “Song of the Day” on this blog) encapsulates the themes of youthful angst, confusion, restlessness, and finding one’s self within “Divergent” to a T. Could this soundtrack be any more flawless?!
Kelis is a boss. Why? Besides this new track”Jerk Ribs”, which is a perfect for dancing or dreaming, she has named her forthcoming album “Food”, one of my favorite things in the world. Plus, she is a trained chef who studied at the Le Cordon Bleu culinary school, has a sauce line titled “Feast” and is writing a cookbook, and is also set to have her very own cooking special on The Cooking Channel. Mmmmm, milkshakes and jerk ribs…now I’m hungry!
This new video and song makes waiting for Phantogram’s second album (VOICES) that much harder!
